THE GRAND DUKE 1970, MOUNT OREAD, LAWRENCE

AUDIO RESTORATION DONE WITH ADOBE AUDITION, FROM A DIGITAL TRANSFER OF A VINTAGE REEL TO REEL RECORDING OF THE LP. THE FINISHED CDS  ARE NOW IN THE STACKS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS GORTON LIBRARY OF MUSIC AND DANCE.

The Grand Duke, or The Statutory Duel, performed by the Mount Oread Gilbert and Sullivan Company at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Lawrence, Kansas, 1970. “The first live stereo recording with dialogue” of the last Gilbert and Sullivan opera. Recorded on three LPs and released on Century Records. Transferred to digital in 2019. Presented here with the kind permission of Lynne Shornick, musical director. The Grand Duke is not as well known as the other Savoy Operas, and the plot is complicated. These "videos" are just the audio augmented with pictures, for educational purposes, using images of the original characters/designs to help in identifying the characters as they speak and sing. Photos of the original 1896 cast are from Wikipedia Commons, and “Final Curtain" (John Wolfson, 1976). The Percy Anderson costume designs are from the extensive Victoria and Albert Collection online, and are made available for educational, non-commercial use only. I haven't located any photos of the 1970 cast or production, but I'm still looking. Many thanks to Peter Zavon for having the audio digitally transferred. Audio restoration by Maria Anthony using Adobe Audition CC and Ozone Imager. Hiss, hum, click and even clipping are all significantly reduced, although there’s not much that can be done to help the worst of Julia Jellicoe’s mad shrieking.
